The Grumman F9F-8 was first purchased by the Navy in 1951 and was powered by a 7,000 pound thrust engine. Able to reach Mach 1 in a shallow dive, the Cougar was the swept wing cousin of the Grumman F9F-2 Cougar.
The F9F-8 could reach a top speed of 714 mph.
