Most of the existing A-10's are now parked at Davis Monthan AFB
awaiting further disposition.
Despite it's fine track record in the Gulf war, the Air Force plans to
fill the A-10's role with another aircraft, possibly with specially
equipped F-16's.
The white material covering the engines is a special latex rubber
coating called "Spraylat" which shields the stored aircraft from sun,
dust and rain. In particular, it keeps plexiglas windows and canopies
from being damaged by the bright sun. All doors and hatches are
covered and sealed so that the aircraft may sit indefinately. When
needed, the material can simply be peeled off and the aircraft can then
be repainted, fueled and dispatched.
Most airplanes are stored in O.R. (operational ready) condition.
