The McDonnel Douglas A-4 has been an extremely successful design which was first flown in 1954. There have been a large number of types with many improvements being made over the years. The original model, shown here, had a 7,200 lb thrust engine. Later models increased power up to 9,300 lbs and finally to 11,200 lbs thrust in the A-4N Skyhawk II.
Fans of the movie "Top Gun" will recall the A-4 as the aircraft used in the agressor role against the F-14 Tomcats.
Over 3,000 Skyhawks have been built and are flown by a number of different nations.
This example is located at the Fred E. Weisbrod Museum in Pueblo, Colorado and was obtained from the Davis Monthan AFB storage yard.
