The Fairchild Republic A-10 first flew in May of 1972 and was produced
until 1983. Designed primairly for anti-tank warfare, the A-10 is able
to fly low, slow and packs a powerful punch. It's main weapon is a
seven barrel, 30mm gatling style gun (the GAU-8/A) which is mounted
just under the nose. It's projectiles are often made of depleted
uranium which provide the weight and momentum necessary to punch
through the hulls of heavy battle tanks.
The two 9,065 lb. thrust engines can propel the 47,000 pound aircraft
at speeds of up to 449 mph. Some 700+ were built.
There is no two seat model for training which is typically conducted
with the instructor following in another aircraft.
One of the last active squadron of A-10's is now stationed at Davis
Monthan AFB, Tucson Arizona.
